Liberty and Justice

Writer: Blake CahillBlake Cahill

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

That's the pledge that many of us spoke every morning in class. A sentimental and powerful speech to speak as a child. This is the mantra that I grow up on. ”Liberty and justice for all.” But was it just words or maybe a dream? Somewhere we forgot what liberty and justice really means. So let me re-educate us all. Liberty means the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views. So to be liberated is to not be controls by society or oppressed for what you believe in. It is true freedom. Not just the breaking of chains but the freedom of just being. When we truly feel liberated we feel safe to walk out our front door without fear. Liberty is a sense of security that allows us all to be our true authentic selves. But what we have in this country is not liberty. It is oppression, censorship and fake news. This is a form of controling the people. By the very people we voted into office to uphold our constitution. They took a vow to this country and to humanity. A vow to serve the greater good of every Man, Woman, Child, Black, White, Asian and Native American. And when that vow is not held in the upmost importance is when justice steps in. When those we put in power abused it justice should steps in. Or does it? Does the morals that this country was founded on really apply to those in power? The country that we stole from the natives. The country that was built on African slavery. Or were these laws written to protect those in power and enslave the people for there own agenda?

When we look at this country we see 1% of the population holding all the money and power. We see racial profiling and murderous police officers receiving paid vacations for their crimes. 2.3 million people are incarcerated in the United States. And 76% of them are not white. We have the largest percentage of people incarcerated out of any country in the world. And most of these prisons and jails are privately owned. And are pulling huge profits. That does not sound like liberty to me. That sounds like another form of slavery.

So how do we change the current state of events? How do we serve Justice to those who have been unjust? How do we remove those from power who have abused their power? How do we bridge the gap between the 1%? Throughout history we've had powerful peace warriors. Gandhi, Marther Luther King jr., Nelson Mandela and so mamy other who stood up for humanity and found power in words. The most powerful tool that the government can never take from us is freedom of speech. We have the right the right to express information, ideas, and opinions free of government restrictions based on content and subject only to reasonable limitations (as the power of the government to avoid a clear and present danger) especially as guaranteed by the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

There is an essential connection needed between each individual. As we stand together masked we need to unmask the truth of what is truly going on in this country. I believe we need to put more money into school systems and not into the military. Ignorance means lack of Education. And by keeping our society dumb down it is easier to control the ignorance that is run rampant in our country. It is up to us to not only educate ourselves but our children as well. For our children are our future In the hope for a better world.

So now I invite you to imagine what a perfect world looks like. It's harder than it seems to imagine such thing for we have never experienced this before. But through the power of imagination I'm sure we all have a strong concept of what it would look like. What it would feel like. And how it would be to live in such a world. What I am doing is focusing on the positive Not to undermined, forget or push under the table all that is wrong. But so we can have a common goal to work towards. When we change our mindset from what is wrong or not working to what is right and working we begin to take small steps forward. These small steps could look like writing a letter to your congressman. It could be volunteering in your community. Knocking on your neighbor's door and getting to know the people in your community. When we create a sense of comfort with the people around us we are able to tap into our truest authentic self. From this place we are in our power as an individual. And this is done in community. This is the place where leaders are born. Leaders who stick to their values. Who are able to hold the big vision of what we are trying to create. Leaders who lead with their heart and strive for equality.
